Jeep Rentals for the Corolla & Outer Banks 4x4 Beaches

Weekly Jeep & 4WD SUV rentals for Carova, Swan Beach & North Swan Beach — permits, recovery gear & sand-driving walkthrough included

Booked a 4x4 Beach House North of Corolla? We’ll Get You There.

If your Outer Banks vacation house is in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, or Penny’s Hill, the road literally ends at the north end of Corolla. The pavement quits, the beach itself becomes the highway, and you cannot reach your front door without a real four-wheel-drive vehicle.

We rent Jeeps and 4WD SUVs by the week to families heading exactly there. $1,338 for the full week, any 4WD in our fleet about $191 per day, built around the vacation rental schedule. Your beach parking permit situation gets sorted before you drive off — most 4x4-area rental houses come with two Currituck County parking permits through the property manager, and we’ll walk you through what applies to your dates so you’re covered on the sand. Recovery gear and a sand-driving walkthrough come with every rental.

Pickup is at our shop in Kill Devil Hills (2101 Colington Road), right on your route north. Most weekly customers leave their own car parked safely on our lot for the week, transfer luggage to the 4x4, and head out. Open 7 days a week, 7am to 8pm. Pickup and drop-off hours built around the Saturday-to-Saturday rental schedule, not the other way around.

Our Fleet for Weekly Beach House Rentals

  • Jeep Wrangler — true 4WD with high/low range, seats 5
  • Jeep Gladiator — 4WD pickup truck, ideal for luggage and groceries
  • 8-passenger 4WD SUV — larger families and groups
  • Nissan Armada — full-size 4x4 SUV, seats up to 8

Every vehicle: sand-tested, all-terrain tires, two Currituck County parking permits come through the property manager on most 4x4-area houses, Cape Hatteras ORV permit available on request.

Pick Your 4x4 Beach Community

Find your community for the details we tell every guest before pickup:

Carova

Carova Beach is the far end of the run — the northernmost community on the Outer Banks, up against the Virginia line. Depending on the house, that’s a 7-to-11-mile drive on sand from the Corolla ramp, the longest haul in the 4x4 area. Plan around the tide, not the clock. Carova 4x4 rental details →

Swan Beach

A quieter stretch north of Carova with wider, more open beach and fewer houses. Soft sand sections are common away from the tide line, so airing your tires down before you leave Corolla matters here. Swan Beach 4x4 rental details →

North Swan Beach

Further up toward the Virginia line, North Swan Beach is one of the more remote stretches on the Currituck Outer Banks. Expect a longer beach drive from the ramp and very little traffic once you arrive. North Swan Beach 4x4 rental details →

Penny’s Hill

Penny’s Hill is one of the first communities you reach after the pavement ends — a short run up the sand from the Corolla ramp. Short drive, same rules: air down before the ramp and watch the tide line, because the beach narrows through here at high tide. Penny’s Hill 4x4 rental details →

The wild horses (and the one law you can actually get cited for)

The Corolla wild horses are the main reason half the people on this beach are on this beach. You will probably see them — in the dunes, in front yards, occasionally standing in the middle of your lane like they pay taxes here.

The rule is simple and it is enforced: stay at least 50 feet away, and never feed them. Anything that isn’t dune vegetation can kill them, including things domestic horses eat. If a horse walks toward your parked Jeep, you move, not the horse.

While we’re on rules the county actually writes tickets for: tires at 20 psi or less on the sand, 15 mph around people, 25 mph elsewhere. Air back up for free in Historic Corolla Park on your way out.

Is a 4WD really necessary?

Yes — if your rental house is in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, or Penny’s Hill. The pavement ends at the north end of Corolla, and from there it’s 11 miles of beach driving up to the Virginia line. The beach is the road. Without a real 4WD — true low-range transfer case, real ground clearance, tires you can air down — you will not reach your front door.

AWD crossovers (RAV4, CR-V, Outback, Highlander, most rental-counter SUVs) do not make it. They bog down in soft sand within the first mile. The tow off the beach typically runs more than a full week of renting from us.

National chain rental agreements (Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget) explicitly prohibit beach driving. Damage from sand puts the full repair bill on you.

If you already own a real 4WD: drive yours to the Outer Banks and air down at the Corolla station before the ramp. Flying in without a 4WD? Pick one up at Norfolk International Airport — orfjeeprental.com delivers Jeep Wranglers and 4WD SUVs straight to the ORF parking garage, no rental counter, no shuttle. Driving in from elsewhere: reserve a weekly rental from Beach4x4 in Kill Devil Hills, right on your route north. Most 4x4-area rental houses come with two Currituck County parking permits through the property manager, a sand-driving walkthrough at pickup, and recovery gear in the vehicle. $1,338 for the full week.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach my beach house in Carova or Swan Beach?

Yes. The pavement ends at the north end of Corolla, and from there it is about 11 miles of beach driving to the Virginia line. The beach is the only road to Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, and Penny’s Hill, so you need a true 4WD with low-range gearing, real ground clearance, and tires you can air down. AWD crossovers like a RAV4, CR-V, or Highlander bog down in the soft sand within the first mile.

Can I drive a regular rental car on the beach?

No. National chains such as Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and Budget explicitly prohibit beach driving, and any sand damage puts the full repair bill on you. AWD rental-counter SUVs also cannot handle the soft sand. A tow off the beach typically costs more than a full week of renting a proper 4WD from us.

How much does a weekly 4x4 rental cost and what is included?

A full week is $1,338 for any 4WD in our fleet, which works out to about $191 per day. Every rental includes two Currituck County parking permits through the property manager, recovery gear in the vehicle, and a sand-driving walkthrough at pickup. A Cape Hatteras ORV permit is available on request. Pickup is at our Beach4x4 shop at 2101 Colington Road in Kill Devil Hills, and most weekly guests leave their own car on our lot for the week.

What’s the closest airport if we’re flying in?

Norfolk International (ORF), about 90 minutes from Kill Devil Hills. We run contactless airport pickups there — no rental counter, no shuttle.
