North Swan Beach sits about 6 miles up the sand from the Corolla ramp, one community short of Carova and just past Swan Beach. It’s far enough up the beach to feel remote without the full 7-to-11 mile haul to Carova. Like the rest of the run, the beach is the only way in — there’s no paved alternative.
The Drive
From the Corolla ramp, North Swan Beach is roughly 6 miles up the sand, past Penny’s Hill and Swan Beach before you reach it. Tide matters here as much as anywhere else on this beach: sand that’s firm at low tide gets softer and slower to drive as the water comes in, so time your run accordingly rather than working around a fixed departure time. The Community
North Swan Beach runs ocean-to-sound, so depending on the house, you may have water on both sides of the road. It’s one of the more remote stretches in the 4x4 area — fewer day-trippers make it this far up the sand, so traffic and crowds thin out noticeably past Swan Beach. There’s no gas, no stores, no restrooms, and no reliable cell service once you’re past the pavement, same as everywhere north of Corolla. Compared to Carova, the supply run back to Corolla is a bit shorter, but there’s still nothing to buy once you’re out on the sand. Wild horses roam through here too; keep at least 50 feet away and never feed them.
Your 4WD
A Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator seats 5 and is enough vehicle for most groups headed to North Swan Beach; larger parties should look at the Armada or QX80, both built for three rows of passengers. Guests renting a house in the 4x4 area get 2 county beach parking permits through the rental company, sorted before you drive off. Air tires down to 20 psi or less before the ramp — that’s county ordinance — and hold to 15 mph around pedestrians, 25 mph everywhere else on the sand.
