The 4x4 beach · End of the line

Getting to your house in Carova

Carova is the northernmost community on the Outer Banks, hard against the Virginia line. There’s no pavement anywhere in Carova — the beach itself is the only road in and out.

The drive

From the Corolla ramp, Carova houses sit anywhere from 7 to 11 miles up the beach — the longest run in the 4x4 area. There’s no shortcut, no paved alternate, and nowhere to pull off if you bog down. Sand conditions change with the tide: firmer and quicker near low water, softer and narrower at high. Build the trip around the tide tables, not a fixed departure time.

Those eleven miles are worth more than the time they take. The End of the Road is our self-guided hunt along that exact route — the horse fence, Penny’s Hill, the Swan Beach gun clubs, and a 1728 survey marker hidden in the scrub where the sand ends at the state line. $29 per team; the driver hands the phone to a passenger. Beach 4x4 runs the hunts and this site both.

The community

Carova runs to the Virginia state line, where a barrier stops through-traffic — the drivable sand simply ends. There’s no gas, no grocery, no restaurant, and unreliable cell service past the pavement, so fuel up and provision in Corolla before heading north. Wild horses roam here: keep 50 feet away and never feed them. Once you’re in for the week, you’re in — plan the supply run accordingly.

Your 4WD

A Wrangler or Gladiator seats five and covers most Carova groups; parties of six or more should book the Armada or 8-passenger SUV, and one modified Armada carries nine. Both permits — the beach parking permit for Corolla and the Off-Road-Vehicle (ORV) permit for Cape Hatteras — come included with every rental. Air down to 20 psi or less before the ramp — county ordinance, not a suggestion — and hold 15 mph within 300 feet of people, 35 mph elsewhere on the sand.

Carova questions

Can we drive into Virginia?

No. A barrier blocks through-traffic at the state line, so Carova is as far as the road goes.

Do we need to drive back to Corolla for groceries?

Yes — the nearest stores are in Corolla; there’s nothing past the pavement. Some grocery delivery services do cover the 4x4 area, which is worth checking before your trip.
