Swan Beach sits just north of Carova on the Currituck Outer Banks, a quieter stretch with wider, more open beach and fewer houses. Like the rest of the off-road communities, there is no paved access — the beach itself is the only road to your Swan Beach vacation home, so you need a true four-wheel-drive vehicle to get there. This page covers the drive, what makes Swan Beach different, and how to rent a 4WD for the week.

The Drive to Swan Beach

Swan Beach is a bit farther up the beach than Carova, so plan on a slightly longer run from the Corolla ramp. The soft, dry sand sections away from the tide line are more common here, which makes airing your tires down to roughly 18–20 PSI before you leave the pavement especially important. Drive in the firmest tracks near the high-tide line and keep an eye on the tide chart so you have room to pass.

What Makes Swan Beach Different

Swan Beach is more spread out and even quieter than Carova, which is exactly why many families choose it. You get wide open sand, room to breathe, and the same wild Spanish mustangs that roam the whole northern beach. There are no shops or restaurants, so stock up in Corolla before you head north, and remember that cell service can be limited.

Renting a 4WD for Swan Beach

We rent Jeeps and 4WD SUVs by the week to families heading to Swan Beach. A full week is $1,338 for any 4WD in the fleet, including the Currituck County beach parking permit, recovery gear, and a sand-driving walkthrough at pickup. You can leave your own car on our lot for the week and transfer your luggage before heading up the beach.

Swan Beach 4×4 Rentals: What to Know Before You Go

A Swan Beach 4×4 rental is the practical way to reach this quiet stretch of sand north of Carova. Like the rest of the 4×4 beach, Swan Beach sits past the end of the pavement, so a true four-wheel-drive with the Currituck County permit is required to get to your front door. Our vehicles leave our Kill Devil Hills shop already permitted and aired-up for the sand, so you can drive straight up Highway 12 to the Corolla ramp and head north.

Is Swan Beach quieter than Carova?

Generally yes. Swan Beach sits between Carova and North Swan Beach and tends to see fewer day-trippers than the busier southern end near the ramp. That makes it popular with families who want wide-open sand, wild horses, and a slower pace. You still reach it the same way — across the beach in a 4WD — so plan your tide timing and keep momentum through the soft spots.

Where do I pick up my Swan Beach 4×4 rental?

Pickup is at our shop at 2101 Colington Road in Kill Devil Hills, right on the route north. Most weekly guests leave their own car on our lot, transfer their luggage, and drive up to Swan Beach in the rental. If you need more room than a Jeep, our 4WD SUV rentals seat 8 to 9 people, and you can compare nearby communities in our Corolla 4×4 beach guide.
