Getting to your house in Swan Beach

Swan Beach is the quieter middle stretch of the 4x4 area — wider, more open sand with fewer houses. There’s no pavement here; the beach itself is the only road in and out.

The drive

Swan Beach sits about five miles up the sand from the Corolla ramp. Away from the tide line the sand runs soft here more often than anywhere else on the run, so airing down to 20 psi before you leave Corolla matters most on this stretch. Keep steady momentum through soft spots rather than stopping, and check the tide tables (tide tables) before you drive.

The community

Swan Beach is a quieter stretch north of Penny’s Hill with wide, open beach and fewer houses than its neighbors. There’s nothing commercial past the pavement — no gas, grocery, or restaurants — so fuel up and provision in Corolla on your way north. Wild horses move through the dunes here daily: keep 50 feet away and never feed them.

Your 4WD

A Wrangler or Gladiator seats five and covers most Swan Beach groups; parties of six or more should book the Armada or 8-passenger SUV. Both permits — the beach parking permit for Corolla and the Off-Road-Vehicle (ORV) permit for Cape Hatteras — come included with every rental. Air down to 20 psi or less before the ramp — county ordinance, not a suggestion — and hold 15 mph within 300 feet of people, 35 mph elsewhere on the sand.

Swan Beach questions

Is Swan Beach quieter than Carova?

Generally, yes. Fewer houses and a wider beach mean less traffic on the sand — many guests pick Swan Beach exactly for that.

Do we really need to air down for a five-mile drive?

Yes. 20 psi or less on the sand is county ordinance, and the soft sections around Swan Beach are exactly where full-pressure tires dig in and get stuck.
