Getting to your house in North Swan Beach

North Swan Beach sits up toward the Virginia line — one of the most remote stretches on the Currituck Outer Banks. There’s no pavement here; the beach itself is the only road in and out.

The drive

Expect a longer run — roughly six to eight miles of sand from the Corolla ramp, depending on the house. It’s remote enough that the recovery gear in the back of every rental stops being theoretical. Sand is firmer near low water, softer and narrower at high; build the trip around the tide tables (tide tables), not a fixed departure time.

The community

Once you arrive there’s very little traffic — that’s the point. There’s nothing commercial past the pavement and cell service comes and goes, so fuel up, provision in Corolla, and download anything you need before heading north. Wild horses roam here: keep 50 feet away and never feed them.

Your 4WD

A Wrangler or Gladiator seats five and covers most North Swan Beach groups; parties of six or more should book the Armada or 8-passenger SUV. Both permits — the beach parking permit for Corolla and the Off-Road-Vehicle (ORV) permit for Cape Hatteras — come included with every rental. Air down to 20 psi or less before the ramp — county ordinance, not a suggestion — and hold 15 mph within 300 feet of people, 35 mph elsewhere on the sand.

North Swan Beach questions

How remote is it, really?

Remote. No stores, no gas, spotty cell service, and very few vehicles on the sand once you’re past Swan Beach. Plan supply runs back to Corolla.

What if we get stuck?

Every rental carries recovery gear, and the walkthrough at pickup covers how to use it. Air down properly, keep momentum in soft sand, and you’re unlikely to need it — and if you do, we’re a phone call away (our number is in the footer of every page).
