“Do I need a 4WD to get to my Outer Banks rental?” is one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer: if your vacation home sits north of the paved road in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, or Penny’s Hill, then yes — you need a true 4×4, because the beach itself is the only road in.

Do I Need a 4WD? When You Do on the Outer Banks
North of Corolla, NC-12 simply ends and the pavement quits. From that point on, the hard-packed sand becomes the highway to the 4×4-only communities. If your rental address is in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, or up around Penny’s Hill, there is no paved route to the door — a 4WD with low-range gearing and a Currituck County beach permit is the only way to arrive with your luggage, coolers, and family in one trip.
When a Regular Car Is Fine
If your rental is in Corolla proper, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, or anywhere on the paved road, a standard car or van is perfectly fine. You only need to ask “do I need a 4WD?” if your specific address sits past the end of the pavement on the 4×4 beach. When in doubt, check the street name against a map — if it has no paved access, plan on a 4×4.
How to Check Where Your Rental Is
Many vacation homes north of the pavement are booked through realtors and listing sites. If you are still asking “do I need a 4WD?”, look at the community name in your booking. Addresses listed in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, or Penny’s Hill are on the 4×4 beach and require a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Your booking confirmation or rental manager can confirm whether the home is north of the paved road.
Do I Have to Rent a 4WD, or Can I Drive My Own?
You can drive your own vehicle on the beach if it is a genuine four-wheel-drive with good ground clearance, and you can buy the Currituck County beach driving permit yourself. But soft sand, tide timing, and the risk of getting stuck lead many visitors to rent instead. A purpose-built rental comes with low-range 4WD, all-terrain tires, real ground clearance, and the beach permit already installed — so you can leave your own car parked safely and not risk salt, sand, or a tow bill on your personal vehicle.
Renting a 4WD for the 4×4 Beach
Our weekly rentals are picked up at our Kill Devil Hills shop at 2101 Colington Road, right on your route north. Every vehicle leaves with the Currituck County beach permit installed, all-terrain tires, and a low-range transfer case built for sand. Most weekly customers leave their own car on our lot, transfer their gear, and drive straight up Highway 12 to the Corolla access ramp where the pavement ends and the beach takes over.

Tips for Your First Drive on the Sand
If it is your first time driving the 4×4 beach, a few basics make the trip smooth. Air down your tires to the recommended sand pressure before you leave the ramp, keep a steady momentum through soft spots rather than stopping, and watch the tide schedule so you are not caught on a narrowing beach at high water. Drive slowly around the wild horses, give them plenty of room, and stay on established tracks. When you rent from us, your vehicle is already aired-up correctly and prepped for sand, and we walk you through the route north before you pull out of the lot.
Still not sure whether you need a 4WD? Tell us your rental community or street, and we will confirm whether it is north of the pavement on the 4×4 beach. It is always better to know before you arrive than to get stuck at the end of the road with a packed car and no way across the sand.
